  3. Bone Density (DEXA)

Bone Density (DEXA)

A bone density scan (DEXA) measures the strength of your bones. It helps your doctor diagnose osteoporosis and understand your risk of fractures.

  • Exam time: 10 to 15 minutes
  • Preparation: No calcium supplements for 24 hours
  • How it feels: Painless

What is it?

DEXA uses a very low dose of X-rays to measure the mineral content of your bones, usually in the hip and spine.

Osteoporosis often has no symptoms until a bone breaks. Knowing your bone density early helps your doctor decide if you need treatment.

Who is it for?

  • Women after menopause
  • Adults with risk factors for osteoporosis
  • People taking medicines that can weaken bones
  • Follow-up of osteoporosis treatment
