3D Mammography
Mammography is the most important tool for finding breast cancer early, when it is most treatable. Our 3D mammography (tomosynthesis) takes images in thin layers for a clearer view.
- Exam time: 10 to 15 minutes
- Types: Screening and diagnostic
- Preparation: No deodorant, powder or lotion
What is it?
A screening mammogram is for women with no symptoms. A diagnostic mammogram is for women with a lump, pain, nipple discharge or other changes, and may take a little longer.
3D mammography takes several images of the breast from different angles, which helps the radiologist see through overlapping tissue.
Who is it for?
- Routine yearly screening (talk to your doctor about when to start)
- Women with a breast lump, pain or other changes
- Follow-up of a previous finding
- Women with a personal or family history of breast cancer

Common questions
Does a mammogram hurt?
You will feel pressure for a few seconds per image. Most women find it uncomfortable, not painful.
What if I am called back?
Being called back is common and usually means the radiologist needs a closer look. Most callbacks are not cancer.
