Important Facts About CT Scans

ct-scansA Computed Tomography which is also more commonly known as a CT or CAT scan, is a Diagnostics test used to create detailed images of internal organs, bones, soft tissues, and blood vessels. The scan generates cross-sectional images which are viewed by a radiologist for interpretation. CT scan images provide more-detailed information than plain X-rays do. CT scans are one of the best methods for detecting many types of cancers since the images allow your healthcare provider to confirm the presence of a tumor and to determine its size and location. The scan is often used in emergency situations since it can reveal internal injuries and bleeding quickly. A CT scan is fast, painless, and noninvasive. During a CT scan, different body parts absorb x-rays which make it possible to distinguish them on an electronic image. Sometimes a contrast material, also known as dye, may be necessary.

A CT scan has many uses, but it’s particularly well-suited to quickly examine people who may have internal injuries from car accidents or other types of trauma. A CT scan can be used to visualize nearly all parts of the body and is used to diagnose disease or injury as well as to plan medical, surgical or radiation treatment.

Why are CT Scans Done

  • Diagnose muscle and bone disorders, such as bone tumors and fractures
  • Pinpoint the location of a tumor, infection or blood clot
  • Guide procedures such as surgery, biopsy and radiation therapy
  • Detect and monitor diseases and conditions such as cancer, heart disease, lung nodules and liver masses
  • Monitor the effectiveness of certain treatments, such as cancer treatment
  • Detect internal injuries and internal bleeding

You may be asked to suspend breathing during the scan and you will be reminded throughout the study to lie as still as possible so the images do not appear blurry. A CT examination is usually completed in 30 minutes. After the study is done, a board-certified radiologist will review and interpret the results. These results will be then be faxed to your healthcare provider who will then review them with you.
